Interviews

CanvasRebel

Excerpt:

Any collector or fan should know my work span several different series, but the main defining features are my focus on portraits, emotion, and humanity/inhumanity.

AATONAU

Excerpt:

The artist’s deeply personal works are influenced by his life experiences and interactions with the world. Scully’s biracial identity in America, the prevailing class politics, and even everyday occurrences such as video games or observations during daily walks, all contribute to the captivating and intimate nature of his art.

FOXY Labs Magazine

Excerpt:

A majority of his work is an exploration of his heritage (Hawaiian & Irish) and the intersection between the land, the spirit, the people and politics. As Tyler says, he feels disconnected from these elements, and in his works he reconstructs them into otherworldly imagery.

ARTRKL

Excerpt:

Today, my contemplation regards the Minimal Expressionist artist Tyler Scully. His work evokes feelings that I couldn't quite pinpoint before, for he presents a unique interpretation of the vitality of the human form.

Skarno Magazine

Excerpt:

As for the role of art in society, I think it’s extremely important. All companies, political movements, and organizations need art to speak to people in an immediate and impactful way. Art evokes emotion from people and can be used for good or bad as we’ve seen throughout history.

VoyageLA

Excerpt:

Original from the San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve been making art from a young age, but I was more focused on music. My painting sensibility can be broken down into exposure to major artists that have inspired me.

In high school, I ran across a book on René Magritte. Amazed by Magritte’s poetic surrealism my art teacher Mr. Torquemada allowed me to experiment with different techniques and applications of paint. He expanded my art history knowledge and pushed me to not just settle trying to duplicate reality (though he specialized in photo realism).

Santa Clarita Arts

Excerpt:

Headspace is a look into a deconstruction of the face. The subjects are pulled from my social media feeds and I focus on my feeling towards the subject, often time reconstructing repeating aspects in the face and the environment,

Art & Crit

Excerpt:

I would say my artwork tries to achieve two things. One, I’m extremely interested in paint. The texture and depth you can only achieve with paint. What I do you can’t accurately recreate digitally or with any other medium. While I greatly respect and admire hyper realism I feel that they have been surpassed by photography and digital mediums. Some parts such as the eyes are extremely smooth painted in more traditional means while I also use impasto and wet on wet techniques to create textures that deform and decay the source material that I don’t believe any other medium can do.
